The Relationship Between Language and Reading Disorders

Theoretical Approaches To Teaching Reading

This 14 page paper discusses the different approaches for teaching beginning reading. A debate has raged for at least thirty years between those who support whole language approaches and those who support phonics approaches. Both camps do agree on certain aspects of reading instruction. These two approaches are explained and discussed, reporting the major arguments of each side of this controversy. An approach that seems to meet the primary concerns of each argument is then presented. The last few pages includes reference to the U.K. National Literacy Framework and also a generic lesson plan for kindergarten reading instruction.
